Mr. Mattila's practice concentrates in environmental law and toxic tort litigation. He has comprehensive and wide-ranging litigation experience, which routinely includes motion practice, taking and defending depositions, managing discovery, and preparing and interviewing witnesses and experts. Mr. Mattila also provides legal advice with respect to environmental issues arising in connection with real estate and corporate transactions. Such advice regularly involves reviewing and evaluating site-specific environmental data, evaluating reporting and cleanup obligations, and negotiating agreements concerning purchases and leases of real estate, mergers and acquisitions, and asset purchases.
Mr. Mattila's experience includes the following:
- Defended global chemical manufacturer against multiple lawsuits alleging nuisance, trespass, and/or personal injury from dioxin exposure.
- Represented multifamily housing property owner, defending against multiple lawsuits alleging injury from residential exposure to lead-based paint.
- Defended rendering plant against government claims arising under Clean Water Act, and against proposed class action involving claims of nuisance and trespass by neighboring landowners.
- Advised national mass merchandising retail company with respect to environmental compliance, self-auditing and reporting matters.
- Performed comprehensive environmental compliance review for major national transportation provider in connection with corporate governance counseling.
- Counseled national restaurant chain with regard to environmental matters arising in connection with numerous real estate transactions.
- Advised manufacturer with respect to CERCLA cost recovery issues arising from environmental cleanup.
- Advised national waste services provider with respect to state waste disposal issues.
Prior to joining Powell Goldstein, Mr. Mattila served as an Articles Editor for the Tulane Law Review and received a Certificate of Specialization in Environmental Law from Tulane. He has previously worked in the Office of Regional Counsel and Pesticide Program Sections of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 5, and at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
