Trade associations have special legal needs; strong legal counseling and advocacy helps them achieve their goals. Powell Goldstein represents more than 200 national nonprofit trade associations, professional societies, philanthropic organizations and educational institutions. We offer them steadfast counsel on issues that are critical to their success: antitrust, corporate, employment, government relations, pension and benefit planning, policy development and regulatory analysis, contracts, litigation, taxation and technology.

Our team includes an attorney formerly with the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, experienced in tax-exempt organizations; a former Attorney-Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Tax Policy at the Office of Tax Legislative Counsel; and a panel member on the annual White House conference on Consumer Awareness and the Regulation of the Financial Services Industry. Our lawyers also have authored numerous textbooks and articles on the tax and banking laws, taught at local law schools and lectured on tax issues for nonprofits.

Together, we have:

  • Represented a trade association in the acquisition of another association's trade show
  • Represented a trade association in the sale of a trade publication
  • Handled financing and contracts needed for a school to acquire and renovate a new site
  • Represented a trade association during an antitrust audit of its activities
  • Structured and developed tax-advantaged for-profit corporate sales subsidiaries
  • Created the American International Health Alliance (AIHA), a non-profit organization funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development to establish partnerships between U.S. hospitals, medical schools and similar organizations, and their counterparts throughout the former Soviet Union and in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Represented a trade association in acquiring a television show
  • Advised numerous low-income housing organizations before the IRS National Office
  • Represented three affiliated nonprofits in a merger
  • Provided advice on intermediate sanctions as applied to sales of assets and compensation of executives
  • Represented charities engaged in lobbying activities
